Hull Buddhist Group
(founded 1995, reformed 2016)
"Hull Buddhist Group" - is an informal group of local Buddhists that come together occasionally to meditate and support each other's practice.
The original Hull Buddhist Group was formed in 1995 and met weekly for four years at the Unitarian Church on Park Street. Since 2001 an annual Wesak Celebration has been held under the name "Hull Buddhist Groups". In January 2016 there was a meditation morning held which was well attended and the decision was made to reform the Hull Buddhist Group and we thank the founders of the original group for allowing us to use the name and logo.
The Hull Buddhist Group is a collection of
individuals who meet monthly for shared meditation and gentle discussion. Members
who attend come from many different Buddhist traditions, or none. Each tradition has its own ceremonies and customs,
we respect them all and value them equally. Our meetings generally
consist of one or more meditation sessions, readings and discussion,
without following any particular tradition.
Everyone is welcome to attend, whether a Buddhist or
simply out of curiosity. We endeavour to practise compassion and
understanding to include all attendees, recognising we are all on a journey,
and that some of us may be affected by ill-health, whether physical or
mental.
Our normal meetings occur roughly once a month and
last between 2 and 3 hours. We occasionally have longer meetings that last 5
or 6 hours and include refreshments and a shared vegetarian lunch. Between
these meetings there may be simple meditation meetings using Zoom. We may
also organise some social events such as a summer picnic or a countryside or
coastal walk. The Group is organised by a small number of Convenors and
decisions are made by consensus of the membership. Meetings are funded by
donations from members who contribute to a “begging bowl” at meetings. The
funds are used to cover the cost of room bookings, guest speakers’ expenses
and refreshments. Any excess is periodically donated to the Buddhist Prison
Chaplaincy.
Please contact Mike if you would like your name to be added to our e-mailing list; e-mails are send as "blind copies" so please set your "safe list" accordingly.
Please Note
that we have no authority to give teachings or personal spiritual guidance
on behalf of any Buddhist temple, monastery or organisation; only
meditation, readings and general discussions take place at meetings, sharing
our knowledge and experience as laypeople.
Safeguarding – members of the group have not had a
criminal record check; young people should be accompanied by a responsible
adult.
