The HORNE family tree of Mike Horne.
Notes to accompany family tree diagram.
[notes - Some of the spellings of the early generations are sometime vague - variations of the names are listed. Scottish Civil records start in 1855, there are no records of deaths before this date, just births, christenings and marriages. Parish records before that are not always complete.
The generations have been number back from my children - they are generation 1, I am in generation 2. Records for generation 5 and older may well be incomplete - these are the people we have found. The people we have followed between generations are shown in bold. Other family descendants are shown in italics. Surnames are in CAPITALS.
There seems to be a Horne tradition of naming the children after grandparents, aunts and uncles. Second names from the surnames of in-laws seems to have been a tradition from the Mowatt family from Orkney or Orcadians generally. This could explain Clouston, Garson, Johnston, Anderson etc. and later Dewar. There is no definite evidence to support the lineage in Generations 8 and 9. Most early records show Horn without an 'e' in the family name, it then started to appear and became dominant by end of 19th Century. ]
Generation 9 - HORN
The Father of Adam Horn was Adam Horn, who may have been Adam Horn of Wick, Caithness.
Generation 8 - HORN
The parents of Henry Horn may have been Adam Horn (born 1708) of Watten and Katherin. [Evidence - none, except that Adam and Catherine are names repeated in later generations]
Generation 7 - Henry/Harry/Hary/Hairy/Herry Horn (a blacksmith) of Watten. [He is called Henry on his marriage record and son's death record, but variations of Harry on all the records of his children's births. We have not found a record of his birth]
Generation 6 - HORN in Watten, Caithness.
Henry married Jannet/Janet HENDRY/HENRY [her parents may have been John HENRY and Elizabeth MILLER] in Watten in 1776. They had 9 children in Watten :- John (born 1776) Elspet (born) 1779), Helen (born 26/2/1781), Adam (born 1782), Jannet (born 25/12/1784), Catherine (born 13/12/1786), Margaret (born 28/7/1788), Anne (born 1879), George (born 6/1/1793, died 1877). And a son Benjamin born 10/4/1796 in Wick. [Did Henry remarry? There is a record of Harry Horne marrying Anne Whier on 20/5/1817 in Wick.]
Adam Horne married Katherine FLETT in 1806 in Wick. George married twice (see below)
Of the other children - we suspect that: Elspet/Elizabeth married James Keith in 1798, Catherine married James Farquarson in 1816 in Wick, and Margaret married Allan MacFarlane in 1816 in Wick. [There are records of these marriages listed on the IGI but we cannot be sure that these are Henry's children].
Generation 5 - HORNE in Birsay, Orkney.
George Horne from Watten in Caithness married twice. Firstly to Tidy SUTHERLAND. They had 3 children:- Elizabeth (born ca 1828), Henry (born ca 1829 at Birsay), Janet (born ca 1830 at Birsay. Secondly to Ann/Ann-Irvine MOWAT They had 8 children all born at Birsay :- Catherine Johnston [sometimes abbreviated to 'Johns.'] (born 4/12/1833), Andrew Anderson (born 31/5/1835), George (born 16/3/1837), Ann (born 12/5/1839), Adam (born 2/4/1843), Adam Garson (born 2/3/1845), William Clousto [probably a misspelling of Clouston] (born 2/5/1847) and William Robert (born 15/4/1849). We think that Adam and William Clouston died young.
He was a schoolteacher, living at the schoolhouse in Birsay. Presumably he had moved there to work and presumably he had to leave the house when he stopped teaching. In the 1841 list the three older children living at Birsay: Elizabeth aged 12, Henry aged 12 and Janet aged 11.
The 1851 census lists the following people living at the Schoolhouse at Birsay: George Horne aged 59, Teacher of Elementary School, born in Watten in Caithness; Ann I aged 41 born at Stromness on Orkney; Catherine J aged 17; Andrew A aged 15; George aged 14; Ann aged 11; Adam G aged 5; William Rob aged 2.
In the 1861 census he is living in Glasgow with his wife, Catherine, Ann, Adam G and William Rob. He then lists his occupation as a 'mission agent' and Adam G is an 'apprentice salesman'. George died in 1877.
Ann-Irvine MOWAT was born 1810 or 1811 in Stromness, Orkney (according to census 1851 census) but we have found no record of her birth or marriage, but have found records of probable siblings. Parents were Andrew MOWAT (a ships carpenter) and Catherine FLETT (according to Ann's death certificate). Andrew MOWAT was born 10/9/1770 at Stromness ; his parents were Andrew MOWAT of Stromness born ca 1740 and Marjory/Merjory CLOUSTON. MOWAT is a common name on Orkney (ca. 350 on censuses) but we think we have established relationships for 3 generations at Stromness [separate document]. There is a website tracing the CLOUSTON lineage back a further 23 generations the Earl of Orkney.
Adam Garson HORNE married Catherine DEWAR (see below). Ann did not marry (it looks as if she took over the role of carer for her siblings in Glasgow when her mother died and later cared for her father and aunts).
Catherine married Benjamin SUTHERLAND a commercial traveler. She died in Glasgow on 19th January 1917* aged 83. Benjamin died before 1901.
Ann never married. She died in Glasgow on 28th January 1925*, aged 85.
Of the other children we suspect that Elizabeth married John Steven in Wick in 1858, Henry married Anne Waters in 1852 in Kirkwall, and Janet married Donald Manson at Wick in 1849. [There are records of these marriages listed on the IGI but we cannot be sure that these are George's children].
Generation 4 - HORNE in Glasgow.
Adam Garson HORNE married Catherine DEWAR in Glasgow on 25/7/1871 - they had 6 children:- Catherine (born 22/2/1872* ), Adam (born 28/2/1875* - note his marriage certificate says 1880), Alexander Dewar (born 27/10/1877), Elizabeth (born 23/5/1882*), George [maybe Millhouse or Hillhouse as 2nd name on census but not birth record] (born 13/5/1884*), William Robert Clouston (born 17/12/1887).
Catherine DEWAR was the daughter of Alexander DEWAR and Catherine MCDOUGAL who married in 1847 in Glasgow.
On the 1891 census Adam G (widower, occupation clerk) was living with Adam (unemployed aged 16), Alexander (Office Boy, aged 14), Elizabeth (aged 9), George (aged 6) and Catherine HALLIDAY (housekeeper aged 55).
On the 1901 census Adam G (hardware traveler), was living with Adam (sewing machine mechanic), Catherine (dressmaker), George (mercantile clerk), William (scholar), Catherine SUTHERLAND (sister), Ann Horne (sister & spinster) and Janie GRIST (domestic servant).
In 1909 Alexander Dewar HORNE and William Robert Clouston HORNE founded the family firm of Horne Engineering which was in Pitt Street, Glasgow.
Elizabeth ("Bessie") married a James P JOHNSTON in Glasgow on 10th August 1909*. James was a bank teller one year younger than Bessie. He was the son of William JOHNSTON (deceased) a farmer and Jessie nee PHILLIPS. He became a bank manager for the Bank of Scotland at Nairn in Scotland.
Catherine did not marry.
Adam went to India to sell cars sometime between ca 1901 and 1910; was in service for the Strachan family; then was in partnership with Donald STRACHAN running the West End Garage in Queens Road Bournemouth as a Ford dealership.
* Official records seen.
