Dyslexia as a disability-
People are born with Dyslexia - it is not an aquired disabilty that is caused by an accident or develops due to an illness. Dyslexics are therefore not aware that they have lost an ability, they have always been that person. So many would not consider themselves to be "disabled" or have never cosidered that possibility. Some may strongly resent being labeled with the term "disabled".
Being assessed may lead to help with studying, work and life in general. Though this may consist of being given modern aids and software and then being expected to find out how to use them. Not a helpful approach as the indivdiual cannot necessarilly see the problem (as would be the case with a 'non-disabled' person who loses a skill). But if counselling, help and training is provided then the aids could open up a whole new world to the dyslexic. Probably the key to this is to gain an understanding of the dyslexia itself.
The dyslexic will start to realise that it is not their fault because they were born with the disability and that it is never going to go away. There will be changes in the problems over time. The biggest change will be if or when the individual accepts the disability, investigates the problems and starts to find solutions.
here are some things to think about ----
Bad memory -
Worse if stressed -
Presentation -
But also learn to make use of the abilities that dyslexia brings - 3-D modeling, brainstorming, empathy, lateral thinking, empathy, intuition ....
